MAGI SERNA
NEWS

10th of July, 2003: Magi lost to Cervanova 3-6 1-6. Next up for her is the Fed Cup. She will form up the Spanish team alongside MA Sanchez-Lorenzo, Vivi Ruano-Pascual and Anabel Medina Garrigues. They will play against France in Oviedo (ESP) the 19-20th of July. The frech team will be form up by Mauresmo, Dechy, Loit and Cohen-Aloro, a very difficult tie without having Conchita in the team. For more information check the Spain vs. France page on the Fed Cup website.

8th of July, 2003: Magi defeated Conchita Martinez-Granados 6-3 3-6 6-1 today and will now face Cervanova in the second round! Good luck!

7th of July, 2003: A disappointing Wimbledon for Magi, she got injured in her 2nd round match against Matezvic and lost that in the third set after a rain delay that came in a very bad moment for her. She had to retire from the doubles due to the injury she sustained in the singles. So all in all, a bad tournament for Magi. Next up for Magi is the Internazionali Femminili di Palermo where she is seeded No.1 and plays Conchita Martinez-Granados in the first round! she is not playing doubles here. You can follow the singles draw here. Best of luck!

25th of June, 2003: Magi and Jennifer lost to the more experienced team of Lisa Raymond and Lindsay Davenport in the doubles final of Eastbourne, still a great showing for them! Next up will be Wimbledon, good luck!

25th of JUN

20th of June, 2003: Well, good news all over today! Magi won the Eastbourne Cup (which she also won in 1999), defeating Virginie Razzano in the final 6-4 6-2. Magi and Jennifer are in the doubles final, to be played tomorrow against the no.2 seeds Raymond/Davenport (USA). A tough match for Jennifer and Magi, but they've been playing great, so good luck!

19th of June, 2003: Magi and Capriati won their QF doubles match today against the No.1 seeds Likhovtseva/Sugiyama 7-5 7-6, coming back from being behind in both sets! Great effort! In the SF they will face either Dokic/Stubbs or Foretz/Serra-Zanetti. Magi is doing well in the Eastbourne Cup too and has moved into the SF, defeating Stosur and Foretz on her way there, and she'll now face either Morigami or Molik.

18th of June, 2003: Sorry for the lack of updates! not much to tell anyhow, Magi plays Eastbourne this week. She lost in the first round of qualifying to Amanda Janes (GBR), who ranked No.523 in the world can count this as her best victory ever, so we are happy for her, even if she did take out Magi! .

Magi is still in the dubs competition, playing with (you will never guess this one) none other than Jennifer Capriati! how's that for an unexpected team? and they seem to get along quite well, with a combined ranking of 1001 they got in the main draw thanks to a WC. They already won their first round match against Gagliardi/Shaughnessy and now await for their QF rivals. Magi will be playing the Eastbourne Cup (a consolation competition between 1st round losers that wish to get more practice for Wimbledon), so good luck there and in the dubs! Here a pic of Magi at the player's party yesterday:

18th of JUN

1st of June, 2003: Well, just back from Roland Garros! Magi played really well in all three matches we saw of her, she defeated Maria Sharapova (RUS), who screams EVERY time she hits the ball like she was being tortured, then Anna Pistolesi (ISR) in the second round and finally the very young and silly american Hackleroad (USA) in the third round. That third round match was probably the best tennis we have seem Magi play, she simply anihilated Ansley in the last two sets. She lost yesterday to Amelie 1-6 2-6, but still a great week, making the 4th round of RG! this means she climbs up to No. 27 in the rankings and will be seeded for Wimbledon. Next up for her should be Eastbourne and Wimbledon A picture of Magi from yesterday:

1st of JUN

21st of May, 2003: Magi played two matches today, first her singles against Maria Antonia, which she lost 6-2 6-3 and then, her doubles match with Alicia Molik, which they won 6-3 6-4... a pity she lost so early in Madrid, but hopefully she can rest for RG and get some good wins there. A new picture of her at the wta website

21st of MAY

20th of May, 2003: Magi defeated Patricia Wartusch 6-2 6-2 in her first round match today, she now faces Maria Antonia Sanchez Lorenzo in the second round. Here a picture of Magi from the Madrid Open one year ago:

20th of MAY

18th of May, 2003: Magi plays the Madrid Open (Madrid, Spain, tier III) this week, you can see follow the draws here, she is seeded No.6 and faces Patricia Wartusch in the first round. In doubles, she is playing with Alicia Molik and they face Maria Jose Martinez and Conchita Martinez Granados in the first round. Good luck!

14th of May, 2003: Magi lost in a very tight match to Daniela Hantuchova 6-7 6-1 4-6. I guess it could had gone either way. This way Magi loses out on a direct seed for RG by just 1 spot, and will depend on someone withdrawing from RG to get a seed. We'll see. Next week will be the Madrid Open (Madrid, Spain, tier III). Best of luck!

13th of May, 2003: Magi defeated Elena 4-6 6-2 6-0 in the first round of the Italian Open! Well done to Magi, who gets revenge from her loss to Elena the previous week at the German Open. Magi now faces Daniela Hantuchova [7] in the next round, who has defeated Magi both times they had played in the past, so this will be a very tough match, but let's keep our fingers crossed for her! Good luck!

11th of May, 2003: In a repeat of last's week face off, Magi will face Elena Likhovtseva in the first round of the Italian Open - a match that will be very probably played tomorrow tuesday. Let's hope Magi can get her revenge and defeat Elena. Magi is not playing in the doubles competition, which is her first absence from playing doubles in a tourney in as long as I can remember. Not sure why that is, maybe she wants to focus on getting some good singles results this week. You can follow how the draws advance clicking here.

8th of May, 2003: Magi lost to Likhovtseva in a very close match this morning 7-5 4-6 4-6. And in a more expected result, she and Boogert lost to Ruano/Suarez 4-6 3-6. In any case it was a good week for her, she moves up in the rankings to No.36, closer to the seeding for RG - next week is the Italian Open (Rome, ITA, Tier I), let's hope Magi does well there!

8th of MAY

7th of May, 2003: Magi is carving up the draw in the German Open (Berlin, GER, Tier I)! She defeated Silvia Farina-Elia (ranked No.24 WTA) in the first round 6-3 6-4 and Chanda Rubin [6] (ranked No.8 WTA) in the second round 7-5 6-3. The victory against Chanda is her first win against a Top10 in quite a while, certainly is the best win of the season! now Magi faces Elena Likhovtseva in the third round! let's hope she can win! you can follow the singles draw here. In the doubles, plays with Boogert this week and they are in the second round already, after defeating Muller/Rittner in the first round, they now face Ruano/Suarez, the No.1 seeds, so it's looking tough for them, but good luck anyway! You can follow the doubles draw here.

7th of MAY

2nd of May, 2003: Dokic defeated Magi 7-5 6-2 in the quarterfinals this morning and ends up Magi's 14 match win streak, a great run in any case and she's still in the doubles competition. Next up should be the German Open.

1st of May, 2003: Magi defeated qualifier Kleinova 4-6 6-1 6-2 and will face Dokic in the Quarterfinals. There are a couple of pictures of Magi on the Warsaw page, you can see them clicking here and here.

30th of April, 2003: Magi and Kristie Boogert won their doubles match against Fedak/Lastra 6-2 6-2 and will face in the semifinal the winner of the match between Huber/Maleeva and Marosi/Voracova. In the singles her opponent will be Kleinova, who had an easy win against Panova, defeating the russian 6-2 6-1. Good luck!

27th of APR

29th of April, 2003: Magi is playing Warsaw this week, she already won her first round match against Benesova 6-2 3-6 7-5 and will now face the winner of the match between Panova and Kleinova. In the doubles, she plays with Boogie and they are already in the QF after defeating Kleinova/Jans 6-2 6-4 in the first round, they now face Fedak/Lastra. You can follow the draw here .

In the Fed Cup competition, Spain def. Australia 3-2 in the first round of the Fed Cup! Magi won both of her matches quite comfortably (the first one against Nicole Pratt and the second one against Alicia Molik). The next opponent for Spain will be France, and that will be played in July.

27th of APR

21st of April, 2003: Next up for Magi is the Fed Cup. Magi has been selected as part of the Spanish Fed Cup team that will take on the Australian team the 26th and 27th of April in Tarragona (red clay, outdoors). The other members of the team will be: Conchita Martinez, Virginia Ruano and Anabel Medina. The Australian Team is formed by Alicia Molik, Nicole Pratt, Samantha Stosur and Rennae Stubbs. (3 Finals, 2 titles in the last 2 years!) - we'll have to ask the WTA tour if they would mind moving Wimbledon to Portugal

12th of April, 2003: Magi def Virginie Razzano (FRA) 6-0 6-1! and will face qualifier Julia Schruff in the final. There is not a lot of information available about this girl, but on paper, Magi has the edge! from what I have been able to find out, this is apparently Schruff's first main draw appearance on a WTA event. On her way to the final though, she has defeated the No.1 seed Srebotnik (in the 2nd round), so she must be playing some great tennis. Anyway, let's hope that Magi can defend her 2002 Estoril title succesfully. Conquer Portugal again Magi!!!

12th of APR

11th of April, 2003: Magi def Stephanie Cohen-Aloro 6-3 6-2! and is in the SF of Estoril! Well done Magi!! She will face Razzano for a place in the final. In the doubles semifinals Boogie and Magi lost to Mandula and Wartusch, who are the no.1 seeds.

10th of April, 2003: Magi defeated Mandula 7-5 6-0 and is now in the QF, where she will face Stephanie Cohen-Aloro, who def. Maria Sanchez-Lorenzo 6-4 2-6 6-2. Good luck!

9th of April, 2003: Magi and Boogie defeated Nogueira/Menga 6-2 6-1 and are already in the semifinals, where they will face the winners of the match between Mandula/Wartusch and Martinez-Granados/Serra Zanetti. In singles, Magi plays against Mandula today for a place in the QF. Good luck! You can follow the draw in this link. Also you can follow live scores here - there is another website of the Estoril Open, to check for news and pics, but it is in portuguese.

9th of APR

8th of April, 2003: Magi defeated Elena Tatarkova 6-3, 6-1, a really good start for Magi, hopefully she can keep her form in Portugal and defend her title, but one round at a time! next match will be against the winner of the match between Piedade and Mandula.

7th of April, 2003: Good start for Magi in Estoril! Kristie Boogert (NED)/Magui Serna (ESP)(3) def. Natalie Grandin (RSA)/Kelly Liggan (IRL) 6-3 6-2 today! let's hope she can keep this form for the singles too! Magi will play her first round match tomorrow against Elena Tatarkova, a tough adversary, but Magi can hopefully beat her, good luck!
